About

SEAt SHELL is a beach lounger, made from mussel and oyster shells from the waste stream from fish restaurants. The aim of this seat is to make the user think about the problem of waste and our consumer society.

Made for one summer season, the SEAt SHELL is an ephemeral design. The salty air, wind and rain act on the furniture. The bench decomposes into sand through erosion. Over time, the bench leaves no trace.

The wavy shapes of the bench blend in with the beach and dunes. The material comes from the sea and returns to the sea at the end of the summer.

The furniture is Marieke De Backer's final project for the furniture design course (VOMO) at the Thomas More Hogeschool in Mechelen. The design process focused on researching a new circular material.

Bio: Marieke De Backer is a 23-year-old graduate interior architect at Sint-Lucas in Ghent. She further immersed herself in furniture design (VOMO) at Thomas More in Mechelen. In September, she will start studying a postgraduate course in Circular Construction at Howest where she can further develop her interests in ecological building projects and circular materials. She hopes to further develop her passions for ecological materials, ephemeral design and travel in the future.
