As of every year and with an ever-growing curiosity, the Brussels Design September promotes the interaction between roughly a hundred Belgian and international artists and creators with amateurs and connoisseurs in the field of design.

BDS is a fundamentally multifaceted festival that encourages the greater numbers to cross the line and encounter the new facets of today’s design industry by coming in contact with the artists and craftsmen and women in their action (i.e. Arts&Crafts, Jewelry-making, Ceramics, Tapestry Fablabs, Upcycling...etc). Amongst all, the public can choose to see exhibitions, open workshops, happenings, conferences, hands-on workshops, name it...we do it. We will miss no opportunity to encourage exchange and enrichment of knowledge or sensitivity.

From tradition to modernity, Brussels Design September 2023 celebrates the power of design to inspire, challenge and transform our world. Art Nouveau takes centre stage this year as we explore its lasting legacy and influence on contemporary design.

Once again, we want to reinforce the image of Brussels as an attractive and dynamic capital: we will highlight the innovation of our young designers through various events related to Design, in order to enhance the commercial attractiveness of the city.

These past few years, Brussels has incontestably become a city of Design, thanks to the talent and the ingeniousness of our designers. Design from Brussels has started to gain quite a reputation and we want to contribute to this in our own way by organising this event. Design September always wanted to connect with the city and represent its various exaltations and diversities. The importance and influence of the event are shaped more and more as design in its most various forms takes an increasingly important place in the daily life of Brussels : urban furniture, installations, lights...

Our designers’ innovations find their place in the urban landscape. This has contributed in a positive way to the city’s reputation and to its economic and tourist activity. The city of Brussels needs events that put creativity and innovation at the forefront. Design September, alongside the Brussels-Capital Region, the City of Brussels and many institutional and private partners, is proud to contribute to it.

Brussels Design September 2023 celebrates the power of design to inspire, challenge and transform our world. This year we explore the enduring legacy of Art Nouveau and its influence on contemporary design.

For the 130th anniversary of the movement, which is intimately linked to the history of Brussels, Design September will feature the Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, who embodies the essence of contemporary Art Nouveau in both innovative artisanal techniques and his expertise of color. For the first time in Belgium, a major exhibition at MAD Brussels will highlight the diversity of his work.

Derived from Art Nouveau, the Arts & Craft movement finds its inspiration in nature and promotes a return to artisanal and local manufacturing methods. Design September wishes to highlight the daily life of designers and artisans who are sensitive to the notion of sustainability.

Set in an urban environment, Design September will focus on the theme of soft mobility by presenting innovative and sustainable solutions that improve travel in the city.

Glass, a star material of the Art Nouveau movement will be at the heart of this 2023 edition of Design September. Creators and designers who exploit its transparency and luminosity in decorative or architectural elements are warmly invited to participate in our call for projects.
