GLASS - TRANSPARENCY - LIGHT

About

From September 27th to 30th, 2023, La Mercerie, an iconic hub of the Brussels art scene, opens its doors to host a captivating exhibition titled "Glass - Transparency - Light". Presented as part of Design September and in celebration of Art Nouveau in Brussels, this unique exhibition delves into the intriguing interplay between glass, transparency, and light, through the works of contemporary designers.

Founded in 1891 by Mr. Absalon and recognized as an architectural gem of Art Nouveau, the historic building of La Mercerie, designed by Victor Horta in 1912, provides an enchanting backdrop for this innovative exhibition. Rooted in Brussels' heritage for over a century, this emblematic venue transforms into a space where past and present converge, creating an ideal setting to celebrate contemporary creativity.

The designers showcased in this exhibition each bring their unique perspective to the theme of "Glass - Transparency - Light". Ori Orisun Merhav (joined by Thibeau Scarcériaux) through installations and collectible design pieces, explores the renaissance of the insect-derived material shelac, experimenting with new techniques. Roxane Lahidji, an expert in social design and ecological materials, skillfully blends copper woven by textile artist Aurélie Lanoiselée with salt crystals, thus creating one-of-a-kind luxurious objects from raw resources. Lila Farget, a sculptor, ingeniously combines glass and cast bronze in luminous bas-reliefs. Finally, Studio Élémentaires, founded by Apolline Couverchel and Gauthier Haziza, creates works that intertwine light and movement, evoking emotional responses in our living spaces.
