About

GROUP EXHIBITION BY CONTEMPORARY HUNGARIAN PHOTOGRAPHERS

Ever since the birth of Sie Kommen (Dressed & Naked), Helmut Newton’s famous diptych in 1981, fashion photography and fine art photography have gone hand in hand with the boundaries between them often blurred. Today’s top fashion periodicals look like photography magazines, where the importance of the artistic concept often overrides the original aim of merely boosting our desire to purchase the objects depicted in the photos.

It is a worldwide phenomenon that a growing number of photographers work across the adjacent fields of fine art photography and applied photography, and the Hungarian photography scene is no exception. Over the last decade a new generation of artistic talent has emerged in Hungary, successfully developing their own independent artistic photo careers while also working on commissioned projects for international magazines, online platforms and fashion houses.

Hungarian photography has strong roots and international acknowledgement owing to such 20th century masters as André Kertész, Robert Capa, László Moholy-Nagy and others. This tradition, along with the high-quality performance by the current generation of photographers, makes photography one of the most successful platforms for Hungary to prosper in the global artworld.

PHOTO COUTURE is a traveling exhibition examining the interconnection between applied and art photography, which is very much apparent in the field of fashion photography. It is symbolically significant that the program debuted during New York Fashion Week 2023 in the fashion capital of the world. Directly from New York the show has arrived at the Belgian capital on the invitation of Liszt Institute – Hungarian Cultural Center and the Brussels Design September festival.

This exhibition presents a selection of works by ten Hungarian artists. Most of them are well-known fashion photographers, others are similarly recognized visual artists, who are active in other fields of photography but have an artistic approach strongly tied to the world of fashion. Thus the works on display often show fashion from an unusual angle, some of them reflecting upon the less sunny sides of the fashion industry with passion or even humor.

PHOTO COUTURE in Brussels was realized by the art agency EDGE Communications in cooperation with Liszt Institute. The organizers wish to thank their professional partners, Brussels Design September, Central and Eastern Europe’s only international photography fair Art Photo Budapest and the Hungarian Fashion & Design Agency for their contributions.
