NIYONA is an award-winning product & design studio specialised in fine leather goods. Based in the centre of Brussels, our studio is founded in 2010 by industrial designer and leather craftsman Nina Bodenhorst and partner, visual producer, Jonathan Wieme.
We are a product & design studio focusing on craftsmanship, innovation, utility and aesthetics and try to combine these values in our fine leather goods, products and projects. Our workspace is divided in a design studio, leather workshop and showroom open for public where you can shop our collection and discover some curated curiosities. The workshop and atelier allow us to design and produce in-house, going from prototyping to small productions and ensure feasibility, quality and sustainability.
We have the chance to collaborate and create exclusive leather goods for some great names and luxury houses such as Maison Vervloet, two starred restaurant Bon-Bon and chef Christophe Hardiquest, restaurant Bozar Brasserie by David Martin, and his chef, Karen Torosyan, print makers Piece of Chic, chef at home Jérémy Girvan from GJ Cook, master butcher Dierendonck, and much more.
Next to our own collection, bespoke projects and collaborations, we organise on a regular base leather courses. You’re bound to enjoy every minute of this craftsman’s initiation classes, specific hand-sewing, handbag or custom workshops.
According client requirements and desired product characteristics, we select our hides from different local tanneries, all with their own specificity.
Since 2016, for most of our projects and own leather goods, we developed our own leather hides together with a Belgian tannery. The full-grained bovine leathers are vegetable-tanned with mimosa tannin. We developed a common base with common specificities. Which allows us, with the techniques, flexibility and this partnership, to easily decline the finishing aspects (such as texture, thickness, colour, etc...) of the leather hides.
NIYONA was created by Nina Bodenhorst and partner Jonathan. While studying industrial design at ENSAV LaCambre Nina did an internship of 6 months at Delvaux where she learned to design fine leather goods. Afterwards she started working at another luxury house in Belgian leather, Nathan-Baume as a designer and art director where she designed the handbag collections for 7 seasons. In parallel she learned leather craftsmanship at the Arts & Métiers School in Brussels. Since then, she improved and mastered her craft among renowned artisans in Belgium and France.
Jonathan, on the other hand, worked for 7 years in advertising as freelance producer, before leaving the computer screens to focus on the leather craft and handwork.
Nina Bodenhorst and NIYONA are awarded by the Handmade in Belgium label (unizo), Commerce Design Brussels, International Design Awards and national “Vitrine de l’Artisan” 2016 contest, which rewards the best craftsmen of the year.
