BAUKUNST, PERFORMANCE & PERFORMATIVITY
In 2019, A+ Architecture in Belgium and BOZAR coproduce a new series of monographic exhibitions featuring Belgian architectural firms that have been prominent on the international scene in recent years. Performance & Performativity, the series’ second exhibition, is devoted to BAUKUNST, the Brussels architectural firm founded by Adrien Verschuere in 2008.
25 September '19 - 5 January '20

Adrien Verschuere obtained a degree in architecture at the Institut Supérieur St-Luc in Tournai and at the École Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne. Between 2000 and 2003, he worked in several internationally renowned firms such as Herzog & de Meuron in Bale and Office for Metropolitan Architecture - Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam, before co-founding the Made in firm in Geneva.
In conjunction with its architectural work, BAUKUNST is actively involved in research and education. Adrien Verschuere currently teaches at the Catholic University in Louvain and is regularly invited as a critic or guest research professor at various institutions such as the FAUP in Porto, IRGE Universität Stuttgart, Berlage Institute Rotterdam, USI Accademia di Architettura Mendrisio and ETH Zürich. As of next September, he will also be a guest professor at the EPFL in Lausanne.
Since its creation, BAUKUNST has taken part in a large number of interdisciplinary collaborations that attest to its dialogic stance – architecture at the crossroads between art and science – in the project development process. Faced with contemporary architectural challenges, BAUKUNST believes architecture is able to and responsible for providing novel representations of our lived-in environments. Still or animated images convey the firm’s critical reflection and offers a journey amidst ongoing paradigm shifts that are revealed through certain architectural projects. Ever since its creation, the firm has upheld the same approach, as portrayed in 3 Cities, a first and personal exhibition at BOZAR in 2009.
The Performance & Performativity exhibition aims to depict the multiple ties and collaborative practices that support the projects at BAUKUNST. Mock-ups, mechanisms, photographs and various videos illustrate the firm’s recent work and immerse the public in the firm’s unique world of artistic, philosophical and technical references.
At the occasion of this exhibition, the first monographic publication featuring work by BAUKUNST will be published. Coproduced by BOZAR BOOKS, A+ Architecture in Belgium, and Koenig Books, the catalogue raisonné covers all of the firm’s work since its creation, and includes project photos, graphic documents and an interview conducted by art historian and curator Hans Ulrich Obrist. The publication offers an in-depth description of the work displayed in the exhibition.
In addition, Adrien Verschuere will give an inauguration conference at the Centre for Fine Arts on 24 September, that will coincide with the official opening of the exhibition.
